There are many ways to map a city. Roads, gates, temples, neighbourhoods, buildings. But ask someone who has lived through Chiang Mai’s music scene long enough and another map begins to appear: a bar where they first heard a strange new band, the room where someone finally asked them to play a song of their own, a table where a project was dreamed up over drinks, a stage that disappeared years ago but somehow remains perfectly intact in memory.
For this issue, we wanted to follow that map.
What we found is that music places are rarely just backgrounds to the music happening inside them. They participate. They introduce people who might never otherwise meet, give unfinished ideas somewhere to land, allow musicians to become musicians, and quietly collect pieces of our lives along the way. Sometimes their influence travels further than the place itself, passed from one generation to another, from Sudsanan to Slash Twelve, from an older musician to someone just beginning, from one closed door to another that opens somewhere else. Elsewhere in this issue, RibbindaSky describes this relationship simply: places help people become musicians, and people turn places into memories.
Some of the places in these pages are gone. Some have moved, changed shape or changed names. Some are still here, so familiar that it can be difficult to imagine them as history at all. We wandered through old photographs, stories, posters, half-remembered addresses, present-day rooms and the people who continue to keep their lights on. Even our crossword became another small map of places that once held the city’s music.
Perhaps a musical landmark does not need a monument. Maybe it begins much more quietly: people keep coming back. Songs are played. Friendships accumulate. Somebody leaves a poster on the wall. Somebody else remembers where the door used to be.
And one day, we realise the place has been remembering us too.
