Decentralizing the Music Scape

There was a time in Chiang Mai — between 2000 and 2010 — when music didn’t exist on timelines or feeds. It lived in real places, on real stages, through real people. Bars, record stores, spaces, and early-days music venues like Minimal Gallery (Nimman Soi 13), Sudsanan, Khan-Asa weren’t just venues—they were third places where music culture was built.

Like in the song “Nimman In Love” by Harmonica Sunrise back in the day, Chiang Mai’s contemporary living culture was carried outward through song and space.

People didn’t just listen — they showed up, they gathered, they created. In these spaces, they knew each other’s names. They started bands. They wrote original songs. They brought their sound to life and took it on hometown tours. They were the community that fostered the early days of Chiang Mai’s contemporary indie scene – giving rise to artists like ETC., Polycat, Acapella 7, Solitude Is Bliss, to Khian Khai Lae Wanich.

But if no one writes about it, especially in a language the world can understand – did it ever really happen?

So much of Thailand’s music history remains undocumented, unarchived, and unrecognized—not just in Chiang Mai, but in secondary cities (hometowns) like Pattani, Khon Kaen, Mahasarakham, and beyond.

That’s why we started this campaign:

To support the next chapter of TEMPO.wav — a slow, offline-first music media platform based in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

We believe that good music doesn’t come and go with the algorithm.
It lives in underground bars, third places, DIY venues, old archives, and the homes of music people.

We uncover, document, and archive hometown music scenes that are too often ignored by the mainstream.

Through bilingual zines, collectible magazines, radio shows, music programs, and community events, we’re building a living archive for local music culture — starting in Chiang Mai, but connecting globally.

And now, we need your help to grow towards the next step

🚨 why this matters now

Right now, music scenes across Thailand — and across the world — are losing their stories.

Streaming buries memory. Social media feeds disappear. Big media only looks at big cities. If we don’t archive these histories now, we lose them forever,

This campaign is how we protect what’s left. It’s how we build what comes next.

Read more about the WHY.

🎯 What this campaign funds

With your support, we’ll launch the publication arm of TEMPO.wav:

🌀 3 issues of .wav (un)zine :

A free, monthly Thai–English bilingual community zine that captures the raw, real-time pulse of Chiang Mai’s music scene. 1,000 copies distributed locally every month as an offline social media—a gig guide, scene updates/news, new release reviews, interviews with local artists. It will be something to pick up, flip through, and pass around like a mixtape.
– It’s “a Scene you can hold.”

📚 1 issue of .wav magazine

A collectible biannual English-language magazine (150 copies only), telling in-depth music stories from overlooked cities — starting with Chiang Mai. Includes essays, archival images, tour diaries, and rare recordings. Only 50 sets will include exclusive collectibles.
– It’s “(Music) History In Your Hands.

🎁 All backers receive a mix of zines, magazines, merch, name credits, or sponsor perks — depending on your tier.

✊ What’s at stake

We’re raising 200,000 THB to fund this work— and ensure TEMPO.wav’s survival for the next chapter.

This isn’t just about publishing a magazine.
It’s about protecting history, amplifying local voices, and creating an archive for the music culture we’re still building.

If hometown music stories aren’t remembered — then who remembers us at all?
